A Contest and a Phenomenon That Keeps Repeating
Every year, I look forward to this moment with excitement: the melting of the lake.
Once again, this year, the ice was fully gone by April 27th — for the third year in a row!
(A date to keep in mind for next year’s contest!)
A First Canoe Outing Filled With Wildlife Encounters
To mark the occasion, we took our very first canoe outing of the season.
It felt incredible to be gliding over open water again.
Nature, true to itself, welcomed us with some wonderful surprises:
a turtle basking in the sun, a majestic male common merganser, and of course, the return of our beloved loon, its call echoing across the lake once again.
The Forest’s Springtime Choir
Another unmistakable sign of the season: the chorus of spring peepers.
As soon as the sun begins to set, the forest comes alive with a symphony of high-pitched “peeps” filling the air.
These tiny frogs create a bright, vibrant soundtrack that announces the true arrival of spring.
A Magical Time to Enjoy the Forest
I say it often — and I’ll say it again this year — this is truly one of my favorite times to be in the forest.
Everything feels like it’s slowly waking up: the water laps gently at the shores, buds start to swell on the branches, and the animals return to their routines.
Plus, the air is still cool and fresh, naturally inviting you to slow down.
For now, nature is treating us kindly: mosquitoes haven’t returned yet, making every moment outside a true privilege.
It’s only around mid-May, when the buds burst into full bloom, that we’ll need to start sharing the forest with them.
